However, the person decided not to use real info. About the only requirement to post comments on my site is to actually use your information. If this person would like to comment again as a real person, I would happily enter into this debate.

Basically, the person told me that I was wrong, that there are a 100 servers with tons of storage, backups, etc. This may very well be true-my source of information is from the professor whose class I was in. Nevertheless, professors lost data, we all lost productivity, and the fact that we have less storage than any storage-based webapp are all still problems. Hard numbers do not matter nearly as much as the overall sentiment, which is that Universitys need to catch up to the times when it comes to tech. No matter what is backing the system up, it is a backbone of life at Hamline, and should be more solid. We have problems every week with this system. If I can rig up a NAS at my house out of free software and spare parts, I should have always-accessable, fast, spacious storage at the university I attend for $40k a year.

Re: Things that Higher Ed needs to change

In many ways this does not surprise me. I worked in higher ed for nearly 7 years. I've seen entire Exchange datastores run off of a 320GB USB drive. I think what you're experiencing is a throwback to the way higher Ed entered the technological age. Many college IT departments were home grown, and even student run with limited budgets and limited resources. While I don't condone what happened at Hamline, it really doesn't surprise me. I know at least one other school that is running almost their entire wireless infrastructure off of Linksys access points.

However, I do think that college IT departments are starting to grow up and recognize the value of investing in solid infrastructure and solutions. Take a look at @concordiastpaul for instance. They probably have the most limited budget and resources of any of the MN private colleges, yet at the last SMB they hosted, people raved about how good the WiFi was. The rest of their infrastructure is pretty solid too.

I think colleges and universities have a ways to go yet, but they are getting there. They just need leadership that fully understands the implications that good technology practices have on the institution itself, and the people it serves (faculty, staff, students, and guests).

Re: Mac mail app review: Mailplane, Sparrow, Notify

sparrows interface gets to me a bit. i also paid for notify, and do still love it. however, i dont always have imap access, so its limited for me. i hope sparrow can keep iterating, because its a great idea

Re: Things that Higher Ed needs to change

planning on it.

Re: Things that Higher Ed needs to change

You know what you could also write about, how messed up it is that in a junior level class we spend 20 minutes discussing how to take an essay exam. Mail Plane is pretty much exactly the same as the gmail web interface, and since I don't have that many gmail accounts, $25 is too much for me. I'm a paying customer of Notify and so far very happy with it as it stays out of the way and allow me to browse & reply to my mail quickly. Started using Sparrow last week, I love the simplicity and the interface and I can see myself replacing Notify with Sparrow if it remains free, or at least very reasonably priced once it is out of Beta. Sparrow is still in Beta so there are some bugs and not very stable yet. Introverts who know how to build effective online marketing strategies for clients or techies who've built incredible tools. You won't read about campaigns like this because they offer their clients powerful competitive advantages that they'd rather not share with their competitors.

It's similar to political operatives who do the grunt work of campaigns. You may never know their names, but they're doing some heaviest lifting when it comes to things like this.

Re: What this blog will be

All of those are great goals!

If you have a moment please try out tallyzoo.com.
